Unions Blast Car Price Hike Across Industry

United Auto Workers denounced OPA plans for higher car prices saying the move would explode price pressures. UAW counsel Donald Montgomery warned that if the auto makers profit from wage boosts, they will pay the price to customers. OPA said increases for Chrysler Ford and Hudson are tied to pay boosts under the wage-price formula. Milk butter and gasoline also face pressure as prices rise. Until new car prices are set dealers must maintain ceilings but may require customers to pay when the increase takes effect. An anonymous OPA official suggested the hike may top three percent or about 45 dollars on a 1500 dollar model, with dealers possibly absorbing part of the rise. OPA will consult with the Agriculture Department on improving supply and distribution to justify some increases.
