Dooheny Loses First Round Of Fight In Prohibition Era Trial

The New Castle jury for Irene Schroeder, accused of slain State Highway Patrol Corporal Brady Paul, was completed. John Fullerton joined as the twelfth juror as Irene appeared distressed. The panel, two women and ten men, prepared for the afternoon session with opening statements to follow.

Young Pean Approved by Reichstag in March Vote

Berlin reports the Reichstag adopted the Young plan by 266 to 193 with three abstentions. The measure sets Germany on a schedule to pay about 37 billion marks in annuities by 1988. Chancellor Mueller defended the plan as urgent while opposition sought to delay promulgation. President Hindenburg would decide its immediate or delayed operative status.

Attorney General seeks Supreme Court ruling on liquor buyer guilt

Washington March 12 Attorney General Mitchell urged the Supreme Court to decide if a purchaser of intoxicating liquor is guilty under the national prohibition act. The appeal from Judge Motoh of Boston contends Section 6 of the Volstead Act makes buyers criminally liable, opposing a district court ruling that purchase is not a crime.

Pittsburgh man faces federal charge in auto theft case

J Rider of Pittsburgh an agent for the U S Department of Justice investigated in the case of L L Harkness of Cleveland who surrendered Monday afternoon after confessing to stealing an automobile in Cleveland. Harkness once resided in Union City and is linked to a spring Concord road accident injuring several Union City residents. Authorities expect his case before the Erie federal court next week as the stolen car from Cleveland was found abandoned at Meadville. Police are checking ownership of another car found abandoned near Concord township to determine if it was stolen and by whom.
