Garment Strike May End Today Or Tomorrow
New York garment workers and dress manufacturers reach an 11 percent wage package plus 0.5 percent severance and overtime terms after six days of strike. Mediation by city appointees and industry leaders leads to optimism work will resume by Wednesday with nonunion issues and enforcement still under discussion. Local wages averaged $2.10 an hour in NYC and 50 to 15 cents less elsewhere.

A quartet of inmates including Norman J. Mackiewicz and Howard B. Plesett escaped last night from Miami’s skyscraper jail using a rope made from mattresses. Police warned the fugitives are dangerous as they fled toward the city crowds, evading capture after the midtown breakout near 142 p.m. The incident linked to a separate case of a Chicago slaying and a federal car theft chase, with authorities reporting a man from Henlopen claiming bragging rights of an earlier escape from a Pennsylvania jail.
