Repudiates Tax Cut In Joint Economic Committee
Seven Senators and seven Representatives on the Joint Economic Committee reject tax cuts now as unnecessary amid recession. Senator Douglas proposes $44 billion in income and excise tax cuts to boost purchasing power, while the panel urges accelerated public works and federal spending to speed recovery. Kilburn dissents, urging no tax cuts. The committee unanimously backs credits from the Federal Reserve, with hope that renewed confidence will turn the tide. The report notes costly snowstorm effects on stores and railroads, heavier operating costs, and looming flood risks as thawes arrive.
