Hero thugs and a jail escape from Crown Point
A critical look questions why John Dillinger escaped Crown Point jail and suggests hero worship of criminals aided his freedom. The piece cites various opinions, including excuses about a wooden pistol and cowardly guards, and argues the truth lies in the public’s fascination with a notorious outlaw. It contrasts Dillinger with broader European politics and a Portland candidacy, then notes a Vermont car incident and a Burlington hydrant event.
