Civil rights marchers faced violent clashes with state troopers in Selma while plans shifted for Dr Martin Luther King Jr to lead a new march on Tuesday The federal government ordered FBI inquiry and Gov George Wallace faced mounting criticism over the handling of the protest in Alabama with Bevel accusing Johnson of unkept promises.
Glenn King, 59, of 111 Leman Street, was freed Saturday on a 1000 bond by Alderman or ter Auer and slated for a hearing next Saturday. He had been charged with assault with intent to kill for stabbing Mrs. Helen Messinger in the early morning at Lemon Street. Mrs. Messinger was discharged from Corry Memorial Hospital after treatment for a stab wound in the back of the left shoulder. King was granted use of a lawyer and bail. the hearing date was set.
Corry reports the lowest unemployment claims in Pennsylvania with 95 placements in February and 95 job applications handled. The local office also tested 28 high school seniors and 10 for Elgin Laboratories, referred 85 applicants to 33 openings, and placed two handicapped workers while surveying clerical and machine operator training feasibility.
State Police say two weekend highway crashes near Corry injured four people. Montgomery, 22, of Spartansburg, will be cited for passing on a hill crest after losing control on Route 6, causing $75 damage. A passenger, Paul Peterson Jr., 19, treated for a ceration nose and released. A second crash near Corry left Alice Halfast, 18, and Dorothy Kusiak with minor injuries after a car veered into oncoming traffic amid slush, with $700 damage to each vehicle.
President Johnson's Great Society plan advances with a $1.3 billion education bill to aid poverty areas entering the House Tuesday. Senate action is expected soon on manpower training while medical care for the aged nears House consideration.
City police report four teenage boys ages 13 to 15 implicated in a string of car thefts aimed at joy rides. Two cars recovered, including Melvin McGinnett’s Union City vehicle and Arnold Johnson’s East Columbus Ave. car, both stolen Thursday and Friday nights.
A 21 year old local man was fined 50 dollars and ordered to pay 9 dollars costs after grabbing glasses from John Jukes outside Mike's Pizza Shop. Jukes, 20, filed a complaint. Meredith Gilmore, 165 West Smith Street, was arrested on an Alderman Pot ter Auer warrant for disorderly conduct. The incident began when Jukes gave a dirty look and Gilmore allegedly sought a fight. Wally Schang, longtime major league catcher, died at 75 in St. Louis.
Two major bills sit for action this week in Harrisburg. A school bus bill would provide free transportation for parochial students with state reimbursement to local districts. A religious literature course bill seeks to introduce a reading course in public schools.
U S Marines landed by sea and air in South Vietnam to reinforce Da Nang air base against Viet Cong threats. About 2 500 Marines were expected, with 1 200 at Da Nang and a helicopter squadron en route. One C130 was hit by a sniper but landed safely. two casualties reported during the landing.
U.S. decision to deploy two Marine battalions to South Viet Nam could bring the first ground clashes with Viet Cong guerrillas near Da Nang. Reported debates over Army or Marine units ended with 3,500 Marines chosen to deter and potentially engage.
Five anti-Castro Cubans splashed black liquid on the Soviet Embassy in Washington in a surprise bottle-throwing protest. They were arrested, charged with interfering with foreign government property, and jailed overnight as they cited protests over a Moscow student rally and Soviet troops in Cuba.
Beaver County police held John W. Brandvold 27 of Bynum Montana on a murder charge after a fatal rifle shooting in Fallston. Victim William J. Tilley 31 of Beaver was killed early yesterday and Brandvold was arraigned in Beaver County jail with a hearing scheduled.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk says Marines at Da Nang will respond if fired upon but their mission remains securing the air base. He says South Vietnamese forces will handle local defense and that negotiations must show North Vietnam will leave the south alone. The 3,500 Marines landed beginning Sunday night Saigon time.
