Senators Praise Powers For Dangerous Mission

Senators lauded Francis Gary Powers after his U2 mission over the Soviet Union, capture, and imprisonment. Powers testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee amid applause, discussed the explosion that downed his plane, and said he would continue with CIA employment. Smoking May Be Cause Of TB Ulcers In Death Risk

A Royal College of Surgeons committee released a two year study linking cigarette smoking to deaths beyond lung cancer. Findings indicate smoking may raise risk of coronary heart disease in early middle age, contribute to tuberculosis deaths among elderly men, and be a factor in cancers of the mouth throat esophagus and bladder, along with peptic ulcers and chronic bronchitis.

Fire Kills 14 Cattle In Spartanburg Barn Blaze

A $50,000 barn fire near Spartanburg injures Robert Morris seriously with second degree burns while 14 cattle perish. Morris, who escaped as flames reached his clothing, crawled to nearby Roger s home for help after the explosion of attempted gasoline ignition on a tractor. Neighbors aided, two cows and a calf were rescued as the 44 by 66 foot barn burned, with the blaze spreading rapidly. The Morris family, living five miles southeast on Hatchtown road, had just moved to the area after a prior farm fire.

Noses Rebel As Captane Overdose Fills Corry Homes

A mild epidemic of jitters struck Corry as about 160 residents, mainly housewives, reported a strong gas odor. Gas company crews traced the source to an overdose of captane, used to scent natural gas, injected into the main feed on Skinner Hill. Residents called husbands home and the gas office. twenty workers, including eight from Warren, searched homes and equipment until the cause was pinpointed.

Rubinoff To Play Four Free Concerts Monday Morning

Violinist Rubinoff, famed entertainer, to perform four free shows Monday before his main evening concert.
