Steelworkers seek record package as talks near May start

McDonald says negotiations should proceed smoothly with no strike expected as talks likely begin in May. The proposed contract would be the steelworkers’ most expensive yet, covering layoff pay, weekend premium pay, a pay raise, and fringe benefits. Current contract expires June 30. The union seeks time off in addition to higher pay, while demanding time and a half for Saturday and double time for Sunday.
