Two Corry youths are named among eight Union City registrants set to leave March 18 for a yearlong training under the national defense program. He disclosed that 13 Netherlanders have been condemned to death after secret court martial proceedings. Most convicted were charged with spying for England or aiding the British army in case of invasion. The conviction law also revealed a Dutch secret group active from May to December 1940 near the English Channel region.
General Maxine Weygand flew to Vichy for a face to face meeting with Marshall Petain at the government headquarters. Officials said the arrival was kept secret as a precaution after a French air tragedy. Rumors swirled over Libya Syria and Moroccan German activity and Allied plans.
Washington March 6 The appropriations committee recommended a 13 913 093 measure to the House to fund defense housing and apprentice training programs. The bill also provides funds for 700 additional FBI special agents including 300 for anti sabotage and defense matters and 200 for investigation of violations of the Strat law.
Municipal officials stopped erection of a fence at the Aero Supply Manufacturing Company plant after an inquiry into street and property lines. Post hole digging began but the fence construction was ordered deferred pending a further investigation.
British and Norwegian forces sank eleven ships off the Lofoten Islands in a surprise raid on March 6. Nine German merchantmen and one German armed vessel were sunk plus one Norwegian ship under German control. Losses totaled about 16 000 tons with some British and Norwegian casualties reported. A committee will study advisability and review Public Instruction reports on teachers available for public schools. Bristish Losses Light London March The government told Parliament the British army lost 520 men in the Africa and Middle East campaign.
Athens declares Greeks will persist in fighting to secure victory as peace negotiations unfold. Prime officials and military leaders praise Greek resistance and warn the struggle will continue until a decisive Allied victory is achieved.
The Gory Bold band conducted by Lionel Thorogood presented a varied program of martial and popular pieces before a large audience in the Senior High auditorium.
