Accident on board the Maine at Brooklyn Navy Yard

A breach in a boiler pipe aboard the Maine flooded several compartments and she listed about four feet as she settled to one side. About a thousand sailors were aboard. Harrisburg March 6 United Press reports the Attorney General’s Department served notice on the railroads to stop shipments and face penalties. Tramps Use Vacant House in West Wayne Street Incident

Neighbors reported tramps using a vacant West Wayne Street house as a camp after a filly owner absent from the city. Chief Doyle found no intruders or valuables on site. Wreck La Tourraine Near Brest Carries War Cargo

Forty seven people were rescued alive as La Tourraine burned off Brest after being struck by an explosion. The steamer, bound from New York on February 26, carried four thousand four hundred ninety four cases of carriages and uniforms, including twenty nine machine guns and rapid fire weapons. officials say no munitions of war were aboard and fear for crew and passengers persists near the French port of Brest.

Miners Refloated Alive After Gas Explosion Rescue

In West Virginia and nearby areas fourteen miners were found alive after three days entombed in a gas filled mine. Rescue teams reported ninety dead and forty seven survivors already removed. the Layland property mine rescue followed by more rescues brings totals to forty seven alive and forty five still unaccounted for.

Local Couple Married at Erie Today

Paul F Gretzler and Marion J Carey of this city wed this morning at eleven at the parsonage of the First M B church in Erie. Rev Thoburn performed the ceremony. Guests included Mrs Harley Carey mother of the bride and friends in Erie. The Gretzlers plan a brief visit in Cleveland before returning home. The groom is son of Mr and Mrs Henry Gretzler and works in the Journal printing department.

Mine Death Rate Drops in Harrishire State

Bureau of Mines report issued today shows 198 fewer mine accidents in 1914 than in 1913. Deaths fell from 61 in 1913 to 413 in the past twelve months, a decrease of nearly thirty-two percent in Pennsylvania mines.

Annual Meeting of Ladies Aid Held at Knowltons Home

The Presbyterian Ladies Aid held its regular monthly meeting Friday at Mrs. George Knowlton’s Smith Street home with large attendance. Mrs. Walter Peake presided and officers were elected, including Director Mrs. Summer Bent Joy and Treasurer Mrs. Alex Me Inns. Members served cream and cake, and the group invited the Society to hold the April meeting at a church avenue home.
