City Council approves renewal amid protest over housing plan
At last night's meeting, the council formally OKed renewal for the Forrd Ward project while a resident, Mrs. George Downey of 230 East Pleasant Street, opposed it. She urged reallocating about 600000 to build low income housing elsewhere, arguing the plan lacks sufficient affordable units and wastes space on landscaping. City Engineer-Administrator David Johnson said funds cannot be moved outside the renewal area. The plan includes 30 elderly housing units to be built under the separate turnkey program by the City Housing Authority, with the federal government funding the Authority’s takeover. Downey contends the approach still falls short of community needs.
