Erie May Move to Combine Trash and Garbage Incinerators

Erie officials consider merging the city trash and garbage incinerator operations as the garbage plant at 16th and Raspberry streets may close for major repairs. Parks Director Charles Downing says a chimney needs rebuilding, risking a shutdown that would force burning at the trash incinerator. Engineer Hugh Nelson cites capacities up to 200 tons daily, with current outputs around 100 tons for trash and 40 to 80 tons for garbage. A combined operation could extend hours and potentially never revert to separate programs, while mixing waste could improve furnace cooling and efficiency.
