Erie and region note: Emmett J. Bean of Erie nominated by President Truman for brigadier general. Bean is son of Mrs. Margate and the late Emmett L. Bean, becoming the second Erie native to receive a general officer nomination.
A blaze at 2 p m Wednesday left Paul Cope and family’s two Shay frame home on Phase Street largely destroyed with only the exterior partially standing. Fire responders from Muliseville assisted in extinguishing the flames, declaring the house a practically a total loss.
Philadelphia report states 73 defendants, 60 of them GPs, were indicted on fraud charges in a surplus goods racketeering scheme. Attorney Lees says all defendants involved profited by reselling surplus truckloads at extremely high prices using forged certificates. Manuel Stelbern of Gamiden, N.V., named as sole owner of Allied Batts Co.
Washington reports the Axis Sally treason trial recessed as witnesses from Germany are expected to testify. Federal Judge Edward Migiunan presides while Johannes Schmidt-Hieneen, a German witness, is named to testify.
