Tax bills loom as 1930s firms report higher payments
United Press dispatch notes Wall Street watchers fear tax reform may not curb levies. Armstrong Cork Co says taxes added 1.58 million dollars over three years due to law changes, not higher profits, potentially funding 1,254 jobs. Bell System, Consolidated Kistons, and Western Electric report rising 1935–1937 tax bills, with Bell’s reaching 137.64 million in 1937. Trading on New York markets remains dull amid Washington news, with some issues firming in the building and aviation sectors.
