North Warren and Venturer residents voted to canvass funds to activate the North Warren Municipal Water Authority. The authority plans to advertise for bids to install a full water distribution system purchased from Warren Water Company. County commissioners cut millage to eight and a half, citing a $537,145 anticipated expenditure.
A hotel fire in Rock Island early today killed Russell Davusell, 48, of Davenport, and injured three others. Edwin P. Scherer of Des Moines escaped with his artificial leg, hobbled 100 feet down a hallway and down a ladder erected by firefighters before being hospitalized. Firemen recovered the missing leg from his room as flames caused widespread evacuation with more than 100 people fleeing.
