A prison uprising was crushed when 40 police and guards with tear gas, bombs, and riot guns overwhelmed a fortresslike upper floor holding out for over two hours. Eleven ring leaders were captured, two guards seized, one badly beaten, and prisoners returned to dormitories after surrender. Government claims suppression using bombing planes and coast artillery.
London reports record gold and silver highs while the pound sterling falls to a new low against the dollar and franc. Traders withdraw large sums, fueling worry over gold bloc currency stability. British leaders show little concern as Paris views the trend as dangerous. Continued on page three.

Middleburg Pa March 2 Sheriff Strawgser a 29 year old farmhand who pleaded guilty to the slaying of Charles E Gable 62 a farmer and his former employer was sentenced to die in the electric chair by Judge Curtis C Lessher in Snyder county court.
George Varnum of Butler was convicted by a federal court jury of concealing assets during bankruptcy. The jury deliberated 51 hours before finding him guilty of withholding about 20 000 dollars in cash. Defense plans a possible move for a new trial. The indictment followed an investigation revealing 84 000 dollars in tire stock and 17 500 dollars in cash counted in his assets schedule.
Three Hillside high school pupils Charles Roberts Donald Dwyer and James Cunningham were drowned when they tried to rescue a dog that ran out on thawing ice. A fourth boy Robert Cunningham was missing, brother of James, after the ice broke apart.
The Pennsylvania State Bar Association executive committee adopted a resolution favoring a 2 percent general sales tax to raise 203 million dollars in extra revenue over the next two years, replacing Governor Barles 22-point program. Henry A. Poerner, president of Sharon Steel Hoop Co. and associates, announced the acquisition of the Empire Steel falcon plant in Niles Ohio. The plan will establish the Niles Rolling Mill Co. and employ about 800 workers, with roughly 300 starting immediately.
A grand jury investigation into McKean County Sheriff Fred T. Ludwick was ordered after a petition by District Attorney G. Potter alleged unlawful acts and misbehavior in office. Charges include accepting protection money, bootleg liquor purchases, improper relations with a jail inmate, assault and battery, and taking groceries from the jail storeroom. indictment possible at the June term if justified.
Howard W. Elmore, former Chicago sanitary district president, denounces his income tax evasion indictment as spite work by Interior Secretary Harold Ickes. He claims cabinet influence shaped the case due to disputes over Illinois PWA projects and the Chicago sanitary canal. He vows his evidence will prove the insinuation false.
Shanghai March 2 The United Press reports unconfirmed word that Rev S C Prencham an Australian missionary was executed by bandits who captured him and his wife last week The report cites a source in the Chinese government troops returning from Ningchi jana where the Prenchams had beenamped Previously reports said Mrs Prencham who was separated from her husband was killed soon after capture
Washington March 2 federal officials report the first day sale of new government baby bonds topped five million dollars. Treasury officials estimated the total market take by day end and noted strong demand among investors.
Washington March 2 The Emergency Relief Administration allotted 9.85 million dollars for March relief to Pennsylvania and a total 58.58 million to feed and aid 21 million needy nationwide. Some states including Hawaii had allotments withheld pending burden sharing by states. The funds came from an 80 million public works pool with 175 million transferred from federal construction grants for relief.
The Kiwanis Club bridge players defeated the Elks Club 1244 to 114 in the fourth game of a contract series held last evening in the Masonic Temple. Teams included Kiwanis O W Bracken and others. William H. Pickens 68 publisher of the Express weekly in Marienville Pa died last night at Community Hospital Kane after brief illness. He leaves a widow and five sons. Also Dr J H Martin 31 a Spanish American War veteran and prominent Greenville physician died today at his home from pneumonia after brief illness.

In Pittsburgh March 2 counsel for the government and for Andrew Mellon used a weekend recess to sharpen their positions over Mellon's 1991 income taxes. The government seeks 4 million dollars plus penalties and the 600 thousand already paid, while Mellon claims an overpayment and seeks a 120 thousand refund. Evidence shows Mellon's personal wealth dropped from about 200 million to 97 million in 30 days as he transferred roughly 80 million to a family-owned company controlled by his children.
Three Granite Reformatory fugitives seized Dr. Pred Lewis Myers and his car at Leedey today, taking him hostage. A posse of 32 peace officers pursued the trio, believed to include Maloy Kuyke Wnall, Dale Stainpill, and W. L. Baker Jr., in a bank robbery case near Selling on Wednesday.
At Daytona Beach Florida on March 2 Sir Malcolm Campbell missed his 300 miles per hour goal. His Bluebird reached 188.186 mph on the first run and 208.272 mph on the second mile test.
New York dispatch reports a Boston rumor that four men were tied to the Lindbergh kidnapping. Consul von Topelskirch quotes that two men told investigators the plot was hatched near Boston, three years after the infant’s disappearance at Bourland Mountain.
Washington March 2 renewed demands for a balanced budget entered swift negotiations on the work relief bill stalled in a Senate committee. Amendments proposing loan financing for the $480000000 program were ready for submission as debate resumed. Support from both parties grows for a financing schedule, with proposals to sell bonds before spending relief funds and to list possible tax axes. President Roosevelt,, represented by Sen Carter Glass, cautioned against veto of a work relief bill carrying the prevailing wage amendment.
