Washington AP reports a police and FBI sting operation dubbed The Sting ran for five months, moving over 24 million in transactions and seizing 500 stolen credit cards 440 government checks 225 typewriters and calculators 700 savings bonds 18 vehicles and an electrocardiac machine. More than 100 people were arrested including 60 guests at a party celebrating the scheme Involving U S Attorney Donald E Robinson Jr who faced bribery charges. The loot included 1 2 million in HUD checks sold for 750 000. Police began arrests at a warehouse party and expanded to the Washington area with warrants for up to 180 suspects as investigations continued.
Chautauqua County sheriff's deputies investigated two attempted safe burglaries at Clymer businesses on Friday night. At Clymer Agway entry was gained by forcing a rear door but nothing was taken. At Clymer Bay Co. a front door window was broken and an office safe not opened. a $79 citizens band radio was reported missing.
Former President Richard Nixon returns to his San Clemente compound after an eight day journey to China. Nixon, wearing a gray suit and flag pin, was greeted by daughter Tricia Nixon Cox and showed no public remarks after disembarking. He appeared weary but free of leg flare ups, while Kissinger did not conduct a debrief.
Three Pennsylvania post offices have been closed under a USPS program to trim small installations without harming service. Closed are North Pine Grove in Clarion County Westline in McKean County and Flicksville in Northampton County. The postal service has closed or consolidated 186 offices since July 1, saving about 200000 and planning reviews for about 600 more sites to gauge efficiency and potential service alternatives. Bailar said 90 offices were discontinued or consolidated since late November with annual savings exceeding 750000, and regional costs reduced by about 1769.00 to date.
A newly discovered bright comet, Comet West, will be visible in the northern hemisphere this week before sunrise. Observers from Wednesday to Sunday will see it about an hour before dawn, rising from five degrees above the east horizon and climbing to 1¢ degrees by Sunday. The comet, the brightest since 1970, may appear near Venus but is distinct. NASA will study Comet West using ground and space instruments. It was discovered by Richard M West of ESO Geneva.
