Soviets Press Big Powers On Israel Withdrawal Move
The Soviet Union urged Britain and other major Western powers to press Israel to withdraw from occupied Arab territories as part of a broader Middle East settlement. In London, Ambassador Mikhail Smirnovsky met Prime Minister Edward Heath to argue Israel’s refusal to pull out undermines peace prospects. Similar appeals were reported in Paris and Washington, as U.N. mediator Gunnar V. Jarring’s peace moves entered a delicate phase. Egypt, led by Anwar Sadat, said it remains committed to negotiated peace but rejects a separate Egyptian solution, insisting an Arab solution is needed. The Big Four meeting was requested to be moved up to discuss Israel’s reply to Egypt’s offer to sign a peace agreement while Israel maintains its withdrawal stance.
