Defense Secretary McNamara and Gen. Taylor after a 1963 Viet Nam trip told Kennedy the major U S task could end by 1965. By 1965 U S advisers rose to 17,000 and casualties increased. In 1964 and 1965 air strikes, landings, and escalation grew. Marines landed at Da Nang in 1965, followed by tank and helicopter support. The U S built up to about 150,000 troops by mid 1965 and 255,000 by May 1966 as fights intensified. End of year pauses failed to spark peace talks. By early 1966 U S strength reached 230,000 then 255,000 with calls for more. Unofficial Viet Nam dead total 4,014 since 1961.
