Los Angeles police report 76 year old Charles Schaeffer slipped on a broken basement step while fixing a leaky pipe. He struck his head on a cement wall and collapsed in three inches of water, found face down by his wife and pronounced dead.
LOMA LINDA California AP reports 16 year old James Kenneth Whisenant of Barstow was hurled from a car into a ditch when it left the road. An inch and a half of his nose was severed. He was brought 100 miles for surgery as officers found the piece after a 25 minute search. It was kept in ice and saline and reattached by surgeons who said a good chance of healing exists.
Laos premier Souvanna Phouma warns Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese forces mass 17 battalions and heavy artillery for a five pronged assault on Muong Sout in the Plaine des Jarres. Neutralists field about 9000 men as Kor Le forces retreat, threatening Luang Prabang and Vientiane. He cites aerial photos of troop movements.

In Dunganon Pa three youngsters a brother and sister and a cousin drowned while swimming from a row boat in Shermans Creek. Donald Troutman Barbara Troutman Kathy Louise Troutman, all seven and eight, were identified by state police. Fire rescue units pulled the bodies from the water about 20 minutes after they went under. The children were in a cottage group with siblings John and George Troutman and Meggy Troutman nearby when the tragedy occurred.
A sleeping Pittsburgh truck driver was injured when his parked vehicle was struck near Mill Village at 4 30 a m. Allen W Dubose 44 was treated for cut right eye and head injuries and taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Erie. Ralph J Johnson 3 of Waterford sustained face and arm cuts but was not hospitalized. Johnson's car failed to negotiate a curve and struck Dubose's truck. Damages about 500 to each vehicle. A second crash near Spring Creek on the Oil Creek road involved Clarence Hutchinson 46 of Spar Stansburg whose car hit a trailer section of a truck trailer and a utility pole. Hutchinson was not hurt and his car sustained damage.
