Freeman Faces Senate on Estes Scandal Reforms

Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman testified before the Senate Investigations subcommittee that he has issued directives and updated policy to curb irregularities. He promised copies of directives and said Washington HQ must be alerted as soon as any irregularities are discovered by state or county committees. The panel questioned his aides and noted past delays in reporting, while Freeman blamed the Eisenhower era for prior problems as the Estes case expands to examine farm aid programs and the role of officials such as Undersecretary Charles Murphy.

Elgin Boy Rides Tractor into Silo Pit Tragedy

A 9 or 10 year old Elgin boy rode a 3000 pound tractor into a barn wall and fell 20 feet into a water filled silo pit near Blain. Neighbor Donald Triseuil, who pulled the unconscious boy from the water, was hospitalized with shock.

Journal Raises Price Next Monday July 2

The Journal will cost 50 cents per week for home delivery by carrier boys starting Monday July 2. Downtown newsstands will see a one cent rise to eight cents per copy. Part of the increase will be shared with the carriers. Nearby papers have already raised their per copy prices.

Union backs new pay plan at Corry Jamestown plant

Members of Lodge 1097 IA Mags, the Corry Jamestown local, yesterday voted in favor of a proposed Rucker share of production plan. The plan ties yearly and monthly pay to production gains, expands medical benefits, and requires eight hours pay on the holidays. Three Men Face Westmoreland County Robbery Charges

Three Harborcreek gas station robbers, Donald Rath Raymond White and Jananas Sandon, are to be moved to Westmoreland County jail to face armed robbery charges. Erie DA and Judge Rossiter approved transfer after initial Harborcreek incident pleas. multiple counts include robbery aggravated assault and larceny. The 3 entered guilty pleas for the Harborcreek holdup. The 3 suspects assaulted a 19 year old attendant at Gundy’s Service on Route Q. They fled to a gravel pit after the attack.

Wattsburg Man Hurt In Crash

A Wattsburg man was seriously injured in a late yester day collision on Route 1 in Grenne Township. He was treated at St. Vincent's Hospital by hospital staff and transported by Belle Valley EMS. State Police at Lawrence Path reported the crash occurred near the six mile post and Blore was the driver of the car.

Honor Veteran At Guard Ceremony

A veteran National Guardsman, M/Sgt. Frank J. Dulas of Union City, was honored last night by his company at the Armory. He received a letter of commendation and a gilt wrist badge after 14 years in the Guard, with service in World War II and the Korean crisis. He is the father of five and will retire after long service. the unit praised his exemplary record and promised continued recruitment efforts.
