Ribbon Cut Opens Major Erie Thruway Segment
The western half of the cross country superhighway opened after 3 30 p m with ceremonies at the state line. Ohio Route 1 Freeway segment from Madison to Painesville also opened, linking routes toward the Erie Thruway interchange at Route 19 south of Kearsarge. Taylor Named Chairman of City Red Cross
Cynora Taylor Jr. was named chairman of the Corry Chapter of the American Red Cross at a monthly meeting held in the library building. Outgoing chair James Alyn presided as 10 directors were present and officers for the year were elected including Frank Dodd as first vice chairman J H Heerlen as second vice chairman Miss M Agnes Lynch as secretary and Robert Clark as treasurer. The chapter reported 8420 donated for Chilean relief and six large cartons of clothing sent to Chile and Hawaii. Thanks were extended to local groups and donors. A YMCA learn to swim campaign reported about 290 children enrolled under directors and instructors with a canteen lunch served to instructors aides and guests. Home service saw 11 cases assisted in May including four active service men, five veterans and two civilians.

Corry teen critically injured in early Sunday crash
Richard Bono of ants street near Corning was airlifted to Arnett Ogden Hospital Simira N C after a head on crash while en route to auto races. He underwent brain surgery and has a 50 50 chance of survival. Two companions James Maloney and James Hubbard were moved to Corry Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition. Gary Munsee is at home. A separate report notes a mine boom fatality at Corry Country Club involving Raymond Lobb of Houtsdale. The next MINER KILLED workshop meeting for Corry Erie and CLEARFIELD chapters is set for July 26.
