Center Circle being developed into a playground for preschool children with swings slides see-saws benches and sand boxes. Rear area to be graded for an older children recreation center. Plans include organizing several teams and expanding space at Palrhavett North Corry for girls and boys.
Sixty Victory Gardens along the development’s west side show residents’ care and early harvests. The town’s Civilian Defense sector runs smoothly with many air raid wardens at patrols during the blackout, while bond canvass pledges reveal civic splits across the city.
Residents of East Wayne Street voiced complaint as a retaining wall dammed flood waters from Fairhaven. Plans call for a future storm sewer to provide permanent relief by channeling runoff and preventing future flooding.
Manager Thomas J. McCoy reports Fairhaven's federal housing development has been fully occupied since February 1, with initial occupancy on January 15. One hundred units filled rapidly, housing 841 people including 214 adults and 127 children, for workers from Aero Supply, Ajax Iron Works, Raymond Manufacturing and others.
Fairhaven, built at about $400000, stands as a premier federal housing effort in the east. Twenty three buildings created one hundred units for workers families, with cement block construction, insulation, and modern amenities. Occupancy reached by February as trees and landscaping enhanced the site, while a postwar expansion seems unlikely. Local officials urge citizen turnout at Wednesday’s flag-raising to meet residents.
Corry residents are invited to a dedicatory flag unveiling at Fairhaven on Wednesday July 1 at 7 30 PM with a V F W ritual. The Corry band will perform its first outdoor concert of the season, and a 49 foot flagpole will adorn East Columbus avenue. The V F W junior bugle and drum corps will precede the ceremonies.
Fairhaven air raid wardens will open their new clubhouse in the former Bals Mattress plant at Raymond Avenue and Wright Street extension on Tuesday evening July 7. The building is being remodeled and equipment will be added this week. Membership in the civilian defense organization will be a requirement for participation in planned activities led by local leaders.
