Authorities plan arson charges against 16 year old inmate Andy Zinmer for setting a foam padded cell fire at Maury County Jail in Columbia Tennessee. The blaze trapped 24 inmates. 14 deaths include a husband and wife both prisoners and several relatives. A deputy sheriff dropped jail keys delaying rescue for about 12 minutes. 19 of the injured were flown to Nashville area hospitals.
New York police report that the so called Son of Sam wounded a 17 year old girl Judy Placido and 20 year old Salvatore Lupo in a car in Bayside Queens at about 3 20 am. The four bullets came from a 41 caliber bulldog revolver used in previous attacks since July 1976. The victims were treated for multiple wounds. investigators note the shooter followed his usual method of firing through a closed window from behind the vehicle.
Two Pittsfield youths were treated for abrasions after a bicycle accident on Route 27 near Garland. Raymond VanGuilder, 15, and Richard VanGuilder, 16, suffered non serious injuries. Raymond McChesney, 78, of Pittsfield, was driving the car. Damage to the vehicle was $200.
Corry enters the second week of the IBIC promotion led by the Chamber of Commerce Retail Division with about eighty sponsors and broad civic support. Two inmates from Chautauqua County Jail were captured near Sherman New York about three hours after escaping from a second story window around 11 p m. Dennis R Pierce 24 Jamestown held for arson burglary and David J Keene 18 Celeron held for burglary were found on Route 490 west of Sherman by 2 a m. Added charges include escape and they remain in custody pending court appearances.
In Harrisburg lawmakers debate the state budget amid talk of a potential tax increase after six years. A proposed 5.6 billion plan would spend 13 percent more and need about 521 million in new revenue. Options include income tax, sales tax, and corporate tax changes, with exemptions and rates under study.
May imports fell 8 percent to 11.6 billion while exports rose to a 10.4 billion high, reducing the monthly U S trade deficit to 1.2 billion. The May figures show a 12th straight month of imports exceeding exports, with oil and coffee declines driving the improvement.

Vanderhoof 44 of Corry swerved to avoid a motorcycle and wrecked a 1966 car. damage 400. Edward K. Amboyer 52 and Carl L. Sexton 35 Titusville collided on Route north. Amboyer's wife Dorothy treated and released. damage 250 and 50 respectively. Two youths, 16 and 20, were found intoxicated near Route 27 west of Titusville. 16-year-old handed to a relative. 20-year-old Joseph G. Proper admitted for observation.
A Saturday morning two car collision at Spring and West Pleasant streets damaged two vehicles for 400 and 800 dollars respectively, plus 75 to a Penelec meter box and 25 to a city sign. No injuries were reported. Drivers were William B. Vanwhy 21 of Dingmans Ferry Pa and Charles W. Vroman 21 of Centerville Rd. 1.
