Blackout on Steel Talks in Pittsburgh
Negotiators met under a news blackout trying to craft a new labor contract for the basic steel industry before August 1. No official progress report was issued, as 11 major producers and the United Steelworkers Union withheld announcements until a deal is reached. A July 22 strike vote was denied, then floated for July 22 with a conference set for July 15 to move the process. The union charter blocks dates until the conference committee meets. Also, eight year old John Campbell of McDonald died from injuries after being struck by a car near his Washington County home.
