Russians Favor Peace Over War Amid Khrushchev Campaign
Russians mostly support peace moves and hopes for better U.S. relations, fearing renewed Cold War. Within the Communist world some leaders and allies see Khrushchev's peace push as risky, while U.S. relations and domestic tensions push a cautious backtracking after the U2 incident. Eisenhower's Far East trip amid Tokyo riots and spook crash
Washington reports note two trips two embarrassments and two unanswered questions about the Eisenhower administration. The U2 spy plane incident helped Khrushchev blow up the Paris summit. Riots in Tokyo forced cancellation of the President's trip while Japanese and non Communist groups protested a new defense treaty. The White House defense of not halting the program contrasts with Senate committee finding no clear decision to proceed.
