Esquires in Trade in 18th Century England
A London Chronicle note reports that in esquire usage trade folk of gentle blood were not accorded the title. It cites a Welbeck abbey papers letter from Nathaniel Harley of Aleppo to a London correspondent, ending with the quip that no merchants are called Esqs but fools and coxcombs. The piece links Harley to the Earl of Oxford, Tory leader. It also references Swift and a comic exchange involving Mrs Pepper and Bunyao.
