The home of Larry Puckley, a $20 000 ranch style house, burned down late this morning on Carter Hill road. Neighbor Larry Kalika found the fire after the occupant had left for a shower. Corry Fire Chief James Maloney cites living room area as the likely start, investigation ongoing. Corry Elgin-Beaverdam and Columbus fire companies responded with Wattsburg on standby. Flames reached 30 feet high and a thick smoke plume rose over the scene. Puckley rebuilt after a previous house on the lot burned earlier. part of the loss is insured.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation opened bids in Harrisburg to improve about 47 miles of highway in Erie County, including areas in Corry. A bituminous seal coat will be laid on 17 highways in July and August with sections in Waterford, Washington, McKean, Wayne, Venango, Greenfield, Greene, Harborcreek, North East and Concord Townships. Corry Beaverdam and Carter Hill roads will be resurfaced. Traffic may be delayed during construction. Foster Grading Company of Jackson Center, Pa. submitted the low bid of $174,929.54.
The Supreme Court ruled that states may spend tax dollars to provide parochial school pupils with books and certain educational services while banning funding for field trips or lending equipment like maps and audio visual aids. The decision splits opinions from four justices and upholds elements of Ohio’s school aid law as compatible with church state separation.
Police in Erie say Rev. Daniel Davies was charged with aggravated assault and battery involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and corrupting the morals of minors for alleged abuses of at least two foster children in 1975 and 1976. He posted a $20,000 bond and was released.
The Rev Davies lived in Corry on West Smith Street four years ago and worked as an assistant manager in a local store under a trainee program. He later moved to Erie to manage a Sherwin Williams paint store and last Friday relocated to Williamsport to oversee another S W store. His ministerial title originates from an earlier assistant pastor role in Mississippi.
Five local men faced Erie and Warren counties courts in separate sessions. Milton Weilacher of Union City pleaded guilty to possession and delivery of cocaine and received 11 to 23 months in jail plus a $400 fine. Corry residents John Bielak Sr and Jr were fined $150 each for theft and placed on probation. Barry Brentzer of Spartansburg pleaded guilty to marijuana possession and got $300 fine and one year in jail. John Amoroso of Corry pleaded guilty to theft, fined and placed on one year probation. In Warren County, nine guilty pleas and eight not guilty pleas were heard. Lester Williams of Spring Creek pled guilty to DUI and reckless driving.

Akron Ohio AP five hours after a toilet fire a massive sewer explosion ripped west side streets. vandals opened tanks at Patch Rubber Co. plant amid a strike. 3000 gallons of chemicals spilled to sewers before explosive fumes reached Glendale Cemetery area three miles away. no injuries reported though buildings and a water main were damaged. police questioned strikers and plant workers.
