Senate Pullout Vote Won't Affect Much

The Senate passed a non-binding Mansfield pullout amendment 57 to 42 urging nine months of staged U.S. troop withdrawals and prisoner releases from Indochina if all POWs are freed. White House says it won’t alter war policy. House leaders indicate the measure will die in conference.

Pennsylvania Considers Complete Handgun Ban After 1973

A Montgomery County representative prepared a bill to ban possession and sale of handguns after January 1 1973. It allows voluntary retirement of guns before that date with compensation from the State Department of Revenue. Violations after the cutoff would be a felony with up to three years and a $3,000 fine. Law enforcement and other specified exceptions apply. The measure comes with broader budget actions and voting-law changes on the same legislative day.

Welfare Reform and Income Floor Approved by House

The House backed welfare reform creating a federally guaranteed minimum income of 2400 dollars for a family of four, with states allowed but not required to supplement. The package also expands Social Security benefits for over 27 million recipients, raises payroll taxes, and boosts retiree benefits starting June 1972.

Youth groups bring Circus Kirk to Corry next month

Corry area youth groups from Emmanuel Church St. Pauls Lutheran and Columbus Community Church will host Circus Kirk a 16 to 28 year old touring troupe. Two shows July 6 at 2 pm and evening on the field east of Corry Area High School with a three ring tented setup featuring acrobats clowns animals and a 10 piece brass band. The youth ministry project of the Lutheran Church in America the troupe travels in a fleet of witrucks and buses and has been featured nationally. advance tickets available through organization members.

Pleads Guilty In Yablonski Slayings

Claude E. Vealey 27 pleaded guilty to murder in Washington County Common Pleas Court in Washington, Pennsylvania, admitting his role in the 1969 triple slayings of United Mine Workers leader Joseph Yablonski and his wife and daughter. He entered the plea softly before Judge Charles G. Sweet after being escorted from the county jail under heavy guard.
