Supreme Court backs small juries in criminal trials
The Supreme Court ruled 7 1 that the 12 member jury is not required by the Constitution and Florida may use six jurors. The decision states that common law history is irrelevant to jury purposes and endorses experiments by states. The court also held indigent defendants have right to counsel at preliminary hearings, and overturned a 1598 federal rule.
