State layoffs hit Pennsylvania employment bureau counselors
Pennsylvania’s Bureau of Employment Security slashes 400 to 800 jobs as inflation and costs erode funding. Executives cite stable federal funds but rising expenses, while union officials claim about 800 layoffs since last year. By June 30 next year 750 positions may go, with some staff transfers planned to Vocational Rehabilitation.

Smoking Fires Dominate Residential Blazes Across Nation
Harrisburg AP reports that cigarette and cigar smoking cause 57 percent of home fires, with a projection of one in every 100 homes burning this year if trends hold. Travelers Insurance official James N McDonald cites the figures at a fire safety conference led by State Insurance Commissioner Herbert Denenberg, who warns public indifference fuels deaths and losses. Denenberg notes fires kill over 12,000 annually and cause three billion dollars in property damage. In Hanford California a budget line shows a misprint “$96/589” to publicly fund county positions, prompting questions about fiscal drafting.
