Turning Last of Coal Mines Back to Owners Today

The government returned the last thousand coal mines to their owners today, except two in Virginia, ending federal control after 19 months. Wage contracts secured by the War Labor Board promise labor peace as Interior Secretary Ickes exits the mine oversight role. Two Jewell Ridge mines in Tazewell County remained in government hands due to non signing the wage agreement, while most anthracite and bituminous mines were restored to about 1,100 companies producing vast tonnage annually.
