Ghouls Foiled in Grave Robbery Plot at Barker Grave
In Chicago on June 22 a band of ghouls in a large truck tried to exhume the grave of gangster George Red Barker at Mount Carmel Cemetery. A cemetery caretaker Joseph Sobol was fired upon as he confronted the intruders who fled after their gunfire jammed Sobol’s pistol. Police suspect the plan aimed to steal Barker’s body or recover papers linked to the gang, amid ongoing power struggles after Capone’s era. Two other brief items include a youth drowning in Loyalsock Creek near Williamsport and McAdoo departing Cheyenne bound for Wichita en route to the Democratic National Convention.
