Hearing Set for Suspected UC Slayer
ERIE AP A man charged with beating a woman to death with a hammer and stabbing her daughter has been judged mentally competent to stand trial. Ronald D. Hamerick 29 was accused of killing Mrs Hazel L. Kur ness 60 on April 29 165. He has been in the institution for the criminally insane. Judge Thomas W Bethy of Erie County Court set a preliminary hearing for July 9 in Union City. Mrs Kur ness was killed in her Union City home. Hamerick and his wife had lived upstairs in the same duplex as the victim before the slaying. First Assistant District Attorney Richard D Agresti heads the prosecution and arrangements are being made for a preliminary hearing for Hamerick Judy Sth before Justice of Peace Floyd Marsh. Hamerick was arraigned on murder and assault with intent to kill charges immediately after arrest. By court order Hamerick was transferred to Warren State Hospital for psychiatric exams and soon afterward to We Des Johns Shovlin superintendent of Farview petitioned for a hearing May 5 to determine ability to stand trial. Attorney Robert J Kelleher represented Hamerick and is expected to be named by the court to represent him further. The commonwealth is directed to proceed expeditionally with further proceedings deemed suitable by the district attorney. Continued on Page Four.

Clean-Up Still On Restore Utilities Following Squall
A line squall hit Corry last night with high winds and rain, felling trees and downing power and telephone lines. Franklin street bore the heaviest damage as poles were broken and service disrupted to about ten homes. Crews from Penelec General Telephone Northwestern Rural Electric Co. worked through the night to restore service in Corry and nearby towns including Columbus Canadohba Lake area and Lowville. State Highway crews cleared roads and similar damage was reported in Erie County with trees toppled and roofs ripped. Page Six continues coverage.

Six From Western NY Killed In Plane Crash
A twin engine Cessna 401 crashed in a cornfield near Centreport, Pennsylvania, during a thunderstorm killing six people. A seventh aboard was reported by authorities but not found. Victims from western New York included pilot Robert D. Page of Eden and others, with ages ranging to 52. The craft was en route from Westchester to Dunkirk when it went down.

Autopsy Sought In Death Of Corry Man
Erie County coroner Marke Wood ordered autopsy on the body of James Jackson after he collapsed at the Oasis tavern on Main Street. Deputy Coroner Olin Bracken Jr pronounced him dead at the scene. Jackson is at Bracken Funeral Home with calling hours and a service planned, burial at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Jamestown.
