Supreme Court bans housing discrimination in broad ruling
The Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, held that a Reconstruction era law bars all racial discrimination in the sale and rental of property, private or public, deeming it a relic of slavery. Justice Stewart wrote the majority, with dissent by Justices Harlan and White. The ruling extends beyond the 1968 Civil Rights Act and signals enforcement without specific machinery, allowing victims to sue.
