Dirksen Defeated On Two Measures
Dirksen faced defeats on two fiscal measures as a large 4.49 billion bill funded the Health Education and Welfare Labor related agencies aligning with Eisenhower requests by 469.2 million dollars. The medical research portion reached 661 million, 264 million above the president’s request and 208 million above the House. Dirksen urged a 250 million cut to NIHs research funding but failed. A tax cut bill kept the Senate late and prompted morning sessions to follow. The package would repeal local phone, telegraph and travel taxes. The pay raise bill heading to Eisenhower would lift pay for 535,000 postal workers by about 8% and a million other federal workers.
