Merchant shipping subsidies eyed by Senate subcommittee
A Senate Commerce subcommittee led by Senator Potter reviews all aspects of merchant shipping to draft subsidy bills for the next Congress. It seeks a tangible assessment of the national merchant marine needs, tracing federal aid from Civil War era policy through World War I and 1920s loans to the 1936 Merchant Marine Act subsidies, noting current limits and the lack of construction funds, with figures on ships in service and U.S. lead in tonnage.
