Final Inmate Captured In Ray Escape

RUSHY MOUNTAIN Tenn AP The last of the inmates who fled Brushy Mountain State Prison with James Earl Ray was recaptured. Douglas Shelton 32 was jailed after authorities closed in on the area where Ray and Earl Hill were seized. Ray, who killed Martin Luther King Jr., remains in the prison with Hill in a crowded maximum security cell block.

Cuba Frees 10 Americans in Cuba release

Ten Americans jailed on drug charges in Cuba were freed and flown home from Havana to Mexico City. The U S Embassy and State Department provided details on the release noting six had been arrested in 1975 and four in the current year, with names withheld. Remaining prisoners include seven on political charges and U S diplomats plan to focus on their cases. Albert Polange, freed prisoner, said he lost 25 pounds in captivity and described the arrest after a plane malfunction. he claimed charges were broad and a Cuban lawyer was provided.

Spring Creek School Closed by Corry District Vote

The Corry Area School District voted to close the Spring Creek School at the end of the term after a months long debate in which parents urged retention. Reasons cited include falling enrollment, duplicate equipment costs, lack of contra group music opportunities, no library, no indoor PE facilities, and multi level reading duties with small remedial classes.

Corry Man Jailed For Hit And Run

A Corry man, David J Chase of 105 Hatch Street, was jailed in Erie County on hit and run charges after rear ending a truck driven by Lyle F Miles of North Clymer on Stewart Road in Concord Township. Chase, who followed Miles and pulled in too soon, fled the scene but surrendered to Carry City police later. He was arraigned before District Justice Patsy Nichols and held on $500 bond. Damages were listed as 25 dollars to the Miles truck and 5 dollars to the Chase car.
