Flags as symbols of unity mark early American history
Clark Kinnaird explains how State and locality flags played a central role in the American military in the War of Independence and the War of 1812–15, with the Stars and Stripes serving mainly at sea until late in the 18th century, and discusses the 1777 Congress banner as a unity emblem.
