Refute Charge Farm Movement Inpracticable
Pittsburgh June 14 Thousands of unemployed industrial workers are former farmers, John M. Phillips, sponsor of a pack to the farm movement, said today to refute charges the movement would fail because of inexperience of unemployed in farming. Phillips, former chairman of the State Game Commission, replied to State Secretary of Agriculture John A. McSparran, who pointed out that one farmer in ten, or 681,000, have lost their farms during the depression. He proposed the state provide farms and equipment on a ten year repayment plan, noting many abandoned farms were deserted before the depression. He said former farmers face starvation and could raise food for themselves if given land, adding Pennsylvania has fertile land waiting to be cultivated and is a potential breadbasket without irrigation.
