Efforts Begin to Reignite Poor People Campaign Protests
In Washington the Poor People's Campaign resumed demonstrations after a week with about 350 protesters marching to the Department of Agriculture to pressure hunger relief. Two youths were arrested for shouting near the Washington Monument while organizers, led by Rev. Ralph David Abernathy and Sterling Tucker, aim to sharpen focus and prepare for a June 19 mass rally, with Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr as a likely speaker. A contingent of Resurrection City residents then marched on Capitol Hill, singing freedom songs, as police managed the crowd to comply with Capitol grounds rules.
