Black Spartans Move To Stave Off Transfers
A Corry Area School District board meeting rejected Sparta efforts to block transferring the district's three top Sparta grades to Corry Area High School starting September. The move sought to have the district desist in the 1973 1974 term and to answer the equity complaint filed by Sparta Concerned Parents attorney Michael Visnosky. The 5 to 3 votes supported replying within the 20 day limit and sending the district’s answer to the court. The matter proceeds as the court determines whether a hearing is needed.

East Coast Heat Strains Power Grids Across Regions
A widespread East Coast heat wave drives power companies to cut voltage by up to 5 percent to prevent brownouts while Chicago and Michigan utilities reduce by 2 to 5 percent. The heat slams eastern cities with air conditioning demand and reports of pavement buckling near Chicago O’Hare. Severe storms bring heavy rain from the Gulf coast to New England, with thunderstorms easing behind a cooler midcontinent air mass. In Charleston, record rainfall floods streets and forces evacuations, while Tornadoes spin near Laramie, Cheyenne, and Beaufort, Texas, causing refinery damage but no reported injuries.

Dean Wins Immunity for Senate Testimony Dismisses Jury Block
Federal judge John Sirica granted immunity for John W. Dean to testify before the Senate Watergate committee and allowed broadcast of the proceedings. Dean must also testify before the Watergate grand jury without immunity, a move his lawyers oppose. The ruling enables prosecutors to use Dean in building a case while limiting denial steps and continuing coverage. The Finance Committee to Re-elect the President reported 146,639 in legal fees this quarter, bringing total documented fees to 237,725 since last July.
