West Seeking Weekend Talks With Russians in Berlin

June 10 Western powers pressed for weekend talks in Berlin with the Russians to meet a Monday deadline set by Paris foreign ministers on the Berlin rail strike and transport issues. Maj. Gen. George P. Hays said the invitation, issued by the United States with British and French consent, had not yet drawn a reply. Talks would include economic and transport chiefs from the four powers, linking east west trade, transport problems, and the Bevin strike as a single package. Western conferees said no trade pact while the strike remains unsettled, since Russia controls the rail system. American authorities signaled possible separate discussion of similar motives.
