Mellon Bank economist sees economy turning the corner
Norman Robertson of Mellon Bank says the recession is giving way to revival as the leading indicators index rose 4.2 percent in April after a prior 28 percent drop from mid 1973 to early 1975. He cites boosts from tax rebate driven consumer spending, housing permits up 27 percent, rising single family home sales, fewer unemployment claims, and strong capital goods orders, while warning against inflation and over-stimulation that could trigger another downturn.
