A violent thunderstorm battered Erie County with winds up to 60 miles per hour, capsizing boats on Lake Erie and causing extensive damage. Police say two 16 year old males, Stanley R. Brickhouse of Havelock North Carolina and Terry Smith of Cherry Point North Carolina, were arrested at Bay Village near Cleveland after admitting to seven burglaries across Corry Union City Cochranton Meadville districts. Detectives recovered rifles and other items from the suspects’ car and linked them to break ins at several stations garages and businesses, with one local service station reporting theft of coins and a weapon cache. State police from Meadville began extradition steps as the youths await charges in Pennsylvania.
A two-vehicle collision about 1.5 miles north of Union City at 5:08 p.m. injured Gilbert Nicholls, 20, of Smithtown RD Westmoreland County, and Guy Seltzer, Union City RD. Leland Seltzer, 19, driver of the other vehicle, tried to return into a driveway when Nicholls attempted to pass. Seltzer received head injuries and was treated and released. Nicholls had head lacerations and body burns and remained for observation. Damages were estimated at 500 dollars for Seltzer’s truck and 400 dollars for Nicholls’s car.
A large fire destroying four garages a shed and a seven room home in DuBois was blamed on a fire bug. The blaze also gutted a large carriage building and spread to three adjoining horses. No one was injured as Stanley Dietrick his wife and two children escaped before their home was razed. Chief Marvin Sales confirmed the blaze originated in the damaged structure.
