Coast guard crews recovered three bodies from a gondola off Point Pleasant beach after two navy training blimps reportedly collided during an experimental Atlantic mission near Lakehurst. Ensign Howard Fahey was rescued with a possible arm fracture. nine crew members remain missing from the two airships G-1 and L-2.
A dress shop will open in the former Quality Cash Store space in the Tracton building on North Center Street. The building owner is Max Goldberg of Buffalo. Plans include a new front and extensive interior improvements with work continuing this week and a hoped opening in July.
Coriy's Golden Rule Club to cooperate with defense industries to relieve transportation for workers. Clinton Stark of the Pennsylvania Department of Commerce outlined the problem and suggested solutions. Club president Richard Rossbacher named several plant representatives to work with the executive committee on a mutual program. Industries present included Bibaw Maple Products and The Distiller Company, plus drivers moving workers to the city. By-laws revised by the club committee were adopted at Monday's meeting.
Police seek help after three missing girls, Irma Miles and Jean Hess from Corry, and Flora Jepunette Walker from Meadville, all 17, disappeared over the weekend. Miles is 5 feet 7 inches, slender with brown hair and eyes, last seen in a red and white striped dress and red high-heel shoes near West Washington street. Hess is about 5 feet 5 inches, slight build, wearing a pale blue dress and Wenttan oxfords. Walker is 6 feet 0 inches, 19 pounds overweight, in light blue blouse and flowered skirt with tan midge shoes. All may have headed toward Erie, Youngstown, or Meadville.
Fourteen Corry boys form a 54 man group that left Union City for Erie for final exams before induction into the armed forces. Those who pass at Erie today will proceed to New Cumberland for immediate service and potential on day furloughs later.
Associated Press reports from Pearl Harbor that Japan’s fleet, after heavy losses at Midway, limped back toward home waters. Official tallies indicate at least three ships lost or badly damaged, with multiple carriers battleships and cruisers crippled. U S forces suffered one destroyer sunk and one carrier damaged.
The Board of Education approved the 1942-48 calendar, scheduling the first term for Tuesday September 1, with Labor Day preceding a shift of holidays. Cambria Iron to hold stockholders meeting June 23 over Bethlehem Steel bid at 55 dollars a share. Tojo met the Emperor for a war report, air force arrivals reach China, and Bobby Jones and Arthur M. Loew commissioned into the Army.
Work has begun on the Sciota stretch from the city north to the New York state line. State highway department maintenance crews oversee the project, materials have been received, and department caretakers report an exceptionally good repair job planned for the area.
John Allen, 20, arrested in Bay City for failure to report for induction. He was identified as the same Allen involved in worthless check operations last winter. In Kharkov area Soviet thrusts were minor and encircled Russian groups were driven into a small space with strong German air support.
A. B. Seidel of Erie named chairman of Erie County Council of Defense succeeding J. J. Desmond of Corry. Arthur Colegrove publisher of the Erie Evening Journal named to fill vacancy. Board of Erie County commissioners announced appointments and praised Seidel for his defense coordination work.
