A Wichita tornado killed eight people on farms north of the city, with five victims at the Guy Scrivner home during a wedding anniversary and the mother’s birthday. Five Philadelphia County Prison inmates armed with iron bolts and a knife attacked guard John Routh during a jail break attempt at Holmesburg. Routh, 44, died after Kreiger, 21, struck him with an iron tool. Kreiger was killed in the confrontation. Warden Beveridge said the five trusties were Philadelphians Arthur Friese Cyril Lynch David Clancy and George Wallace. Routh lay gravely wounded and was taken to Philadelphia General Hospital.

Crage, a former Corry High and Bullis Prep standout in football and basketball, is the first Corry boy in years to qualify for a service school, earning the chance through Congressman F L Rodgers of rie.
Charles Wright age 22 of Belle Valley was killed when his car struck a culvert on Sham hon Road a mile south of Wesley Ville shortly after 2 am. Winifred Bagnall, age 51 of Tl Gimneee, sustained facial and knee injuries and was hospitalized at Hamot. Private P M Marino of the state motor police reported the accident.
A U S Army Air Corps bomber with six crew members disappeared after a nonstop flight to Chicago. The aircraft departed Salt Lake City yesterday afternoon and was not reported after arrival at a Chicago air yard about 9 p.m. last night.
Washington June reports advocate Senate action on a measure to empower the government to seize defense plants where strikes threaten production.
