Isolationists Move to Block Roosevelt War Aid Plan
Washington June 8 Congressional isolationists move to block the Presidents trade in plan to furnish military equipment to Allies. Senator D Worth Clark plans a Monday meeting of Bennie and House isolationists to organize opposition arguing the program is direct intervention and may lead to American troops abroad. The plan would have the army and navy turn back warplanes and old guns to manufacturers, with proceeds credited to future government purchases. Roosevelt says authority exists to trade in weapons on new purchases but needs more legislation. If not, the army may sell surplus equipment to friendly nations under a 1920 statute. The United States Steel Corp will act as a clearing house for transferring old guns and ammunition originally costing about 200 million, now valued at around 50 million.
