Lieut Anderson May Be Held as Axis Prisoner
Jamestown June 7 An Army Air Forces lieutenant, John Robert Anderson, son of Clarence B Anderson, was missing in the Tunisian area and may have been rescued from the Mediterranean and held as a prisoner of war. A letter to his parents from Major Jacob Schoelmont, 85th Fighter Squadron, says Anderson disappeared April 23 during an activation bombing mission over enemy shipping in the Gulf of Tunis after his aircraft was attacked by three German fighters. If he jumped with a parachute, he would have landed near Carthage, north of Custs, making capture possible. Other U S pilots have been picked up by enemy craft, so there is a good chance he is a POW. Further efforts will determine his status.
