Police Chief Wesley Huffaker and officers arrived at a street after an accident to find his three year old son Phillip dead. The boy had been struck by a car driven by a 15 year old bride just from her wedding reception. The driver said she did not see the child until it was too late.
In Philadelphia a tense hearing over challenged absentee ballots for the Democratic senatorial primary drew tempers. City Commissioner Thomas McHenry stormed out calling participants fools and declaring he might be fired. Genevieve Blatt led by about 640 votes over Michael Musmanno as lawyers examined signatures on ballots with board members Maurice Osser and Louis Menna granting the request to view signatures.
Hollywood producer Fred Hitchcock and actress Ellie Sommer reported two dressing room burglaries at Universal Studios in Hollywood California. Cash totaling 279 dollars and two clock radios were taken, with the incident occurring while they were working on a film production.
Negotiators led by George W. Romney and James Carey reached a tentative agreement to end the 99 day Essex Wire Corp strike in Hillsdale after an all night session. Roy Campanella, 42, former Brooklyn Dodger catcher, reportedly married Mrs. Roxie Jaynes Doles on May 8 in New York.
